ULTIMATE FOR ALL YOUTH

by Bay Area Disc Association

Help us make Ultimate a dynamic change agent for youth from underrepresented communities.  The Ultimate for All Youth program focuses on three core components to help build brighter futures for kids:

  • Social-emotional development
  • Ultimate instruction and competition
  • Fitness and health development

Ultimate Frisbee is a low-barrier team sport that can be played anywhere.  Ultimate is unique because it is governed by Spirit of the Game™ (SOTG), a tradition of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on the players rather than referees. Thanks to SOTG and a focus on sportsmanship and camaraderie, Ultimate has the ability to create a strong community for players across a spectrum of geographies and backgrounds.

Since Ultimate is self-officiating, youth learn to take responsibility for their own behavior and are empowered to use their own judgment and ethics to govern the game play.  When youth learn how to play Ultimate under the proper coaching approach, a positive social pressure to make the right decisions emerges and they quickly learn to self-officiate honestly and fairly. This leads to the resolution of conflicts in a constructive manner that builds their social-emotional IQ, which is a critical skill in life. Ultimate also provides a fun way to teach and address the core values of restorative justice: conflict resolution, respect, inclusion, empowerment, solidarity, moral education, active responsibility, collaboration and problem solving.

Ultimate for All Youth also uses the sport to make connections and provide youth with increased opportunities to help break the cycle of poverty.  Through opportunities like 1-on-1 mentoring with adult Ultimate players, connections to university teams, field trips to players' workplaces, and competition with other youth teams in the area, the youth will be exposed to new and unique experiences.
